Up-front Advice

If you research carefully, you will learn that, technically, there cannot be such a thing as a certified organic seedless watermelon. Why? A certified organic seedless watermelon is a genetically altered watermelon. The genetic alteration is done chemically.

To create a seedless watermelon, seed producers treat natural watermelon seed with Colchicines, a chromosome-altering chemical. Colchicines changes the chromosome number in the seeds from 2 to 4. Once this is done, the seeds are pollinated with the natural 2 chromosome watermelon. The result is an un-natural, genetically modified watermelon with 3 chromosomes.

Continue your research and you will learn, as I did, that plants must have an even number of chromosomes to reproduce. Since the un-natural, genetically modified watermelon now has 3 chromosomes, it cannot form seeds. You get a seedless melon.

A watermelon that is touted as certified organic seedless watermelon may be grown organically, but chemicals were used in the production of the seeds. You will have to decide your own definition of "organic" to decide whether or
not you want the melon.

Organic Methods To Stop Slugs and Snails

Slugs and snails have a tremendous capacity to frustrate gardeners. Overnight they can destroy young seedlings and disfigure your favourite plants. There are numerous ways to stop slugs and snails. The most common is the ubiquitous slug pellet; however, many gardeners are reluctant to use a poison which can harm wildlife and the environment. If you wish to avoid chemicals there are still many effective methods to control slugs, these are some of the most popular.

Beer Traps.

Organic

If you save an old plastic container and then sink it into the soil it can provide an excellent beer trap. Slugs are not fussy so feel free to use the cheapest beer. Also make sure it is easy for the slugs to slide into the container by keeping the edges close to the soil level. In the morning, you will find the beer trap full of drunk slugs. When it is full simply dig a whole and pour the contents in; then replace with fresh beer. I have used this method to great effect and it is completely environmentally friendly.

Organic Methods To Stop Slugs and Snails

Egg Shells Around precious plants

Slugs require a smooth surface to move. If they come across a barrier of grit and gravel they will not be able to pass. Therefore, you can protect your favourite plants and vegetables. This is a cheap way to protect the odd plant. However, it can be quite time consuming, unless you only have a small number of plants. Also if the barrier is not extensive, some slugs may be able to pass by.

Copper Strips.

Similar to eggs shells and grit copper strips can be placed around plant pots to prevent slugs climbing into them. The metal strips can be bought from local garden centres and once in place offer a permanent deterrent to slugs climbing in.

Encourage Frogs

One of the best organic ways to decrease your slug population is through encouraging their natural predators. One of the best slug eaters is the humble frog. If you create a natural pond to encourage frogs and toads, you will find a natural ally in the fight against slugs. On a good night, frogs can get through 10-20 slugs so they can be very powerful.

Encourage Birds

Some birds, especially the Blackbird love to eat frogs. Encouraging birds into your garden with a bird table may help provide another predator for eating slugs. Unfortunately in the UK, the decline of the Song Thrush has been attributed to the use of slug pellets (the birds get poisoned on the slugs who have eaten pellets) This is another good reason for not using slug pellets.

Go Hunting

If you go out in wet conditions, especially around dawn or dusk you may be able to find and kill a lot of slugs yourself. With a trowel you can easily slice them in half. To make your job leave a lettuce leaf around and check under stones.

If pursue these methods you will find the slug population drastically declines; it can also be quite good fun to encourage natural methods of dealing with slugs, rather than resorting to chemicals.

Ruminants, such as cattle and sheep, have a particularly important role in agroecosystems since they process leguminous forage plants. These are the backbone of organic crop production because of their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen. To obtain sufficient nitrogen in an organic crop rotation, about one-third of the crops should be legumes. In practice this means that organic animal production must be based on ruminants (and that these are fed like ruminants). In contrast, monogastric animal, such as pig and poultry, require high quality protein in their diets. These animals can be considered as competing with humans for food, at least to the extent they use protein sources suitable for direct human consumption. Thus, it is sometimes argued that monogastric animals should be considered marginal in organic farming, primarily to be fed on agricultural wastes. They also can contribute to the agroecosystem by producing useful services, such as biological weed or pest control.

Development approaches for organic animal production in developing countries has to be based on realistic and practical situations. First, one must recognize the limitation and complexities of export market for animal products, while there exists greater market opportunities for organic animal products locally, for instance indigenous chicken meat and eggs. Practical approaches for organic farming should be based on and developed from locally existing animal production systems which already have close resemblance to prescribed organic practices, such as those mentioned earlier for ruminant and indigenous chicken production. The local standards and guidelines for organic animal farming ought to be initially considered and developed from such existing animal husbandry practices. Further development of such standards will be a continuous process based on practical experiences gained from production, processing, and marketing of the resulted organic animal products.

The Success of the promotion of organic animal farming at national level will depend on many important factors including government policies and legislative supports, socio-economic infrastructure, farm training and extension as well as other technical supports.

Fruit trees should be sprayed in early spring before the bud opens in order to kill overwintering insects/insect eggs nestled in the crevices of your fruit trees. Spray when there is very little or no wind, and no rain, snow, or sleet in the forecast. Read instructions carefully and cover yourself well because it can be a messy job when you spray your tree from the top down until it drips. In addition, the lime sulphur has a strong smell, so wear clothes you can wash.

A second type of organic fruit tree sprays, the horticultural oil/water mixture, can be used not only in early spring but also throughout the summer as long as the spraying is done early in the morning when the weather is cooler and the tree has cooled off. This mixture is far less messy than the first one.

Natural Fruit Tree Spray

You can always opt out of this messiness by making your own mixture with natural ingredients from your kitchen cupboard or bought at a gardening center. One spray mixture which is easy to make and which can be used in the spring or at any time during the summer months includes liquid seaweed (found in plant nurseries) blackstrap molasses (the kind you use for cooking), apple cider vinegar, and Murphy soap - all added to a gallon of water.

The seaweed and the molasses not only fight fungal disease in the garden but also feed the plant through the leaves (called foliar feeding) especially if you are spraying really early in the morning when the leaf pores are still open.

You needn't worry about the molasses attracting bugs. The plants absorb the molasses instantly. Boom it's gone! The fruit trees just love it!

The acidity of the vinegar helps kill black spot on roses, powdery mildew, brown patch, and other nasty fungi.

So instead of spraying your fruit trees with poisonous insecticides/pesticides, you may want to consider using the dormant spray combination of lime sulfur and horticultural oil, the dormant horticultural oil/water mixture, or a spray made up of natural ingredients, a spray which not only smothers the insects/insect eggs and fights fungal diseases but also feeds the tree.
